“Anglican Identity in the 21st Century”

The distinct character of the Anglican expression of Christianity has been a subject of confusion and disagreement, no less in the 16th century than in the 21st. Since the Reformation, that identity has been disputed, both among parties within Anglicanism and by those contrasting Anglicanism with other Christian traditions.

This special issue is intended to address both longstanding and newer questions of Anglican identity with scholarship that is relevant to orthodox Anglicans in North America today. Papers should examine the antecedents, shaping, preservation, inculcation and evolution of Anglican identity, as well as how that identity influences (and is influenced by) ideas, individuals, events and other factors both inside and outside the Anglican tradition. Possible topics could include:

  • Forces for divergence and convergence in the understanding of Anglican identity at various points in the past two millennia
  • The impact of specific individuals or events on creating or promoting a specific view of Anglican identity
  • How the prayer book or other Anglican formularies have defined, influenced or reflected changes in Anglican identity
  • The influence of new ideas within Christendom (Biblical interpretation, ecumenical dialog) or without (popular culture, secular institutions) upon the understanding of that identity
  • Anglican distinctives in the 21st century

We are not interested in a polemical argument for a particular position, but instead are seeking an appropriately researched explanation of some aspect of Anglican identity. As with any such article, submissions should offer new insights beyond what has been published previously (e.g., Ramsey, 1991; Booty et al, 1998; Orombi, 2007).
